Democrats will lose the 2018 midterm elections because they still don’t understand why so many people dislike them.
It’s the typical case of excitable democrat behavior: get hysterical about good poll numbers then go completely overboard on issues that leave a bad taste in the mouths of everyday Americans.
To add insult to ignorance, Democrats will lose in 2018 because they’ve placed their electoral eggs into losing baskets: republican women, Trump-hate, and young voters.
Why democrats will not win the 2018 election to control Congress
We need to be realistic: #MeToo isn’t enough. If the highly-generalized “republican woman” voted for Trump after the infamous Access Hollywood tape — which she did — then we already have proof she’ll stick to party lines again in the 2018 congressional elections.
During the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing, democrats played their cards (poorly) in hopes of winning the suburban republican woman vote. Unfortunately, in making the entire political battle about privileged men vs. everyday women, democrats shot themselves in the foot. They remain clueless about the soul of America and political attitudes in swing districts. The political id of party-persuadable America is a three-pronged mashup of: “All I care about is money”, “I’m tired of being told what to do by elitist airbags”, and “I haven’t thought about it much because I work 12 hours a day, but my family has hated democrats for generations, therefore, so do I.”
Focusing on women isn’t enough to win back congress in 2018. Too few suburbanites will cross party lines because their investment accounts are doing extremely well (they have their eye on that new boat or even that lake house). Sadly, democrats have decided to make #MeToo an almost singular motivator in the 2018 election. Moreover, republicans know that focusing on women isn’t enough for democrats to win, which is why they’re doing everything in their power to keep the focus on the “radical women” protestors in an effort to anger their own base even more. Ironically, it’s as if democrats don’t understand that “Woman A” might not like or agree with “Woman B”, whereas republicans grasped that message long ago… republicans have always been much better at pitting brother against brother and sister against sister.
Stop Trump is also a non-starter: Trump may be an idiot, but based on the policies and judges his administration has pushed through, for republicans, Trump is the best president of their lifetime (with the volume of money pouring into bank accounts, and breadth of civil rights being squashed… Trump might even be more beloved than Reagan!).
Yes, Democrats will lose the 2018 election for basically the same reason they’ve been losing since 2010: Americans don’t vote based on morals. Americans are selfish and scared. Americans vote based on church, pocketbook, and peer pressure. Red states are getting redder and blue states bluer. As such, the only hope democrats have to win in 2018 is to solve the one constant in elections: young people don’t vote. The DNC is twitterpated that young people are trending toward democratic viewpoints, but that’s pointless if they don’t vote!
Beyond relying on Trump-hate and women stereotypes, if democrats think they have an effective structure to get younger voters to the polls, they’re wrong about that as well. The reason is the same as why Chuck Grassley explained republicans don’t have women on the Judiciary Committee: it’s hard work and is wicked time consuming. The thing about young people, especially young Americans, is that they love to complain, but rarely do anything about it.
The angrier and more frustrated young Americans claim to be the less they actually do: “I don’t vote because both sides are owned by corporations, so it’s pointless.” … and better yet, “I hate how things are, but I didn’t vote because the candidates don’t inspire me.” Today as it was in the 90’s: it’s fashionable to be a brooding, apathetic waste of space… the only difference is they poor-little-impotent-me-complain on Instagram instead of MySpace.
I hope I’m wrong. I really do. But we learn from history, and history shows that relying on young voters to get off their arses combined with moderate republican women crossing party lines is a losing game plan. If you want democrats to win back Congress, y’all better find every 18-30 year-old you know, grab them by the ear, and physically walk them to the polls… because relying on the DNC to get out the vote is a fool’s errand… just like everyone knew — and all the polls said — that Hillary would win.
