BBC America takes a shot at its very first scripted series with Cooper.
From the Hollywood Reporter:
“BBC America’s first scripted series, Copper, is a lot like the city and country it depicts: not quite there yet. Set in 1864 New York, it’s a tale of emerging identities. New York isn’t quite there; it doesn’t even have a morgue yet. The U.S. itself, torn by the Civil War, isn’t quite there; the abolition of slavery hasn’t exactly made the races equal, nor has there been much improvement in the immigrant experience.”
The HR concludes that while Copper has a great cast, solid ideas, and large ambitions, it’s going to need a kick on the arse (or two) before it’s ready to prime time (because Two and a Half Men made it and has SUCH an amazing premise…)
Interesting, however, about this series is its adherence to the setting: 1864 New York. You can only do so much of that in post production and with CGI. It’s not like any of the 10 different CSI shows where you just plug in some flashing light filters and squishy sounds – the authenticity of the set, the costumes, and the overall tenor of what New York was like demands more from every aspect of the tv production from cast to crew.
You can see from where the “grit” of Copper comes when you see the backgrounds of the two co-creators: Tom Fontana (OZ, Homicide: Life on the Street, St. Elsewhere) and Will Rokos (Monster’s Ball, Southland).
BBC America allotted 10 episodes for Copper… time will tell if it will ever turn into anything more.
