Oil Can Guitar is my favorite POLITUSIC search of the day… because while I love guitars… I was totally CLUELESS about oil can guitars, which means I learned something new.
Now that I’ve embarrassed and admitted that… normally I don’t endorse dudes recording themselves playing guitar and posting to youtube, because, well, it bothers me just as much as people recording themselves dancing, pretending they’re superheros, or lip sync’ing to boy bands.
But nevertheless, at least this guy built his oil can guitar, so he’s earned a show off moment in my book. Watch this video if you didn’t know about oil can guitars, either I dig the tone, and think you will, too:
I LOVE resonator guitars, played with a good slide and soulful, painful vocal. Oil can guitars seem like much deeper expression of low-down, rural slide guitar blues. Art meet music; sculpture meet music.
I looked around on youtube a little for oil can guitars before settling on this one. Reason: there’s something very wrong (in my mind) about electric oil can guitars… just doesn’t seem right (and even worse if you have an oil can guitar, but then play it like a damn Les Paul Standard… what’s the point? You can get a decent slide tone with an electric, but it’s still not the same. This video makes the oil can guitar make sense: acoustic slide.
To whomever made the oil can guitar search and just taught me something about oil can guitars, thanks :)
