This week’s Band of the Week is a bit special. I have trouble expressing in words how grateful I am for the music of Radiohead. Here is a band that has been a part of my life’s journey since I was old enough to begin questioning the journey itself. If you are a music lover, there has probably been a time when it seemed like music was all you had. When you were down, it would lift you up. When you were up, it would beat its wings next to you, surrounding you in a flock of notes and harmonies. Music spoke the language that words could not define, and lyrics defined the feelings that could not be spoken aloud. Radiohead have mastered that language, both musically and verbally, and it has been a pleasure to ride along with them for these past two decades.
These lads have just released a new album on Saturday: The King of Limbs. It does not disappoint. In fact, it is brilliant.
Here are a couple of new tracks:
Slight of hand
Jump off the end
Into a clear lake
No one around
Just dragonflies
Flying to the side
No one gets hurt
You’ve done nothing wrong
Slide your hand
Jump off the end
The water’s clear
And innocent
The water’s clear
And innocent
…
Just… wow.
Here’s a video from 2009 – I was lucky enough to see Thom Yorke perform ‘Lotus Flower’ at The Orpheum theatre, when Atoms For Peace were still known as ‘??????’
And here are some old favourites:
If you do not already own a copy of OK Computer, The Bends, In Rainbows, and all of the other albums, cancel everything, and go to the record store NOW. Or, if you are too young to remember going to record stores, then make sure to go online and get the mp3s. Immerse your soul in love.
