A friend of mine has recently run into a problem with which I’m sure a lot of us suffer: where can I make a lot of noise with my music?
Since most of us can’t go out and jump into the studio, but might have a little money to invest into a proper acoustically treated room where we can work, I thought I’d briefly share what we’ve found. He’s a DJ and producer who has a nice house, but there’s just no place to set up his gear – can’t close walls, and his family need to have a place to sit and sleep, right?
His idea was to pick up a shipping container… at first I though that was something only Google would do for servers, but the idea struck me so I started looking around… turns out it’s a feasible option.
if you have some property, then it’s easy to plop it down somewhere, and I suppose you could also throw it on a trailer and make a mobile studio… maybe? Not sure if that would be less that a regular box trailer to start with, but might be.
Below is the article I found that shows how someone in Australia does it (and pretty nice, too, this thing – a shipping container – is a proper small recording studio!)
The post has mostly photos of it, but that’s the important part. It has drawings of the studio layout, and a lot of pictures of the actual build so you can see the steps in converting a shipping container to a recording studio.
Check this out:
Building a recording studio inside a shipping container.
I am impressed it could be done, and even give you a decent tracking or mixing environment.
So the question is: what other options are out there to give us a “private” space to work and make music without spending a million dollars on building a traditional studio?
We’re looking for other starting-point ideas as well as anyone who has actually pulled it off:
- Those pre-build garage things as a recording studio (you know, “As seen on TV” usually with an RV parked inside.)
- Home Depot Sheds (mainly as a mixing or production room given the size)
What else could work as a cheap and easy shell where you can acoustically treat the inside for a workable recording or mixing studio?
