Who else waited in line to buy Pearl Jam’s VS album?
(CD, album, whatever you called it. I called it a record).
Showing my age, most likely, but yeah, I was in high school then. Had my driver’s license for a few months, king of the world! Ten was great. Music was “talking for all us angry teenagers.” There was a ton of great music coming out of Seattle and Pearl Jam had an awful lot of label support for VS, so we were all pumped and ready to pop that thing into the car stereo and let ‘er roar.
Anyway… I waited in line and the local record store for Pearl Jam’s VS. I just had to have the short release dic that came in the cardboard case. A must have. I knew somewhat what was coming once I finally got unwrapped and into my car stereo (lord… think it had a Bazooka sub in that little car. poor thing. very embarrassing thought). But when the first track hit — it literally hit; like punched me in the face (in a good, fight club sort of way). Ballsy, sort of hard, dirty and a gritty, then a hanging pause before everything drops in and just drives forward like you just can’t really stop it… I knew I was going to love that record. Still do all this time later.
Clearly this is a bit of a reminiscing post. I don’t listen to Pearl Jam a while lot any more, but still list them with that group of bands that had a big impact on how and what I remember and love about music. Granted.. high school… what we loved in high school being it a person or music seems to stick with us in a special way our entire lives… but nevertheless, when no one can deny that when you star that CD and GO starts you know your in for a bit of a ride.
I will always support Pearl Jam, like every band they don’t always release something that I love, but if that were the case, then the band wouldn’t be trying to grow and get better or express themselves in how they are now.
So in support, make sure we link to Pearl Jam tour dates on their site, of course :)
… and must show props to all the songs on the entire VS album:
- Go
- Animal
- Daughter
- Glorified G
- Dissident
- W.M.A.
- Blood
- Rearviewmirror
- Rats
- Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
- Leash
- Indifference
This is the sort of album that (if you were around my age, anyway) you MUST own as a CD or on vinyl. It just seems right. Seems proper, you know? MP3s, ogg, whatever, don’t “feel” right for that record.
It deserves more than that.
