My last girlfriend didn’t “get” They Might Be Giants, which should have been the first sign that it wouldn’t end up pretty.
Let’s just say I wasn’t the only bee in her bonnet. Not to put too fine a point on it, anyway. On to greener pastures!
First, if you don’t know much about them yet, download the They Might Be Giants “Clock Radio” (you’ll see the link on the They Might Be Giants home page) that is a rather cool and unique way to listen to not just TMBG music, but rare tracks, interviews, and get get a vibe of what the band is all about.
For a quick taste of TMBG Music you can see their MySpace page (yeah… I know… myspace… click that link over there). THey Might Be Giants also has an AMAZING fan base both in their broad expanse as well as fierce loyalty. Last time I saw TMBG in Boston the conga line overtook the entire area and everyone was…. tooo happy. Don’t think I’ve ever see THAT many people be down right happy and a concert. No, “WHOOO HOOO!!! YOU ROCK!!!” sort of happy you get anywhere, but like… genuinely happy. Not to bad an effect to have on a crowd, eh?
Ok, so y’all saw the reference, so here’s a video of Birdhouse in Your Soul.
I should try more effectively to give actual information about TMBG (because if you don’t have any experience with They Might Be Giants, then yeah… this all can seem a little strange… but so are going to junior high, shoe laces, egg plant, republican politics, McDonald’s special sauce, and whatever this thing is: … but they’re ALL pretty damn entertaining).
Not that I want you to stop reading this post, but there’s a great list of the best They Might Be Giants songs that’s worth exploring as well.
Taking this directly from the TMBG fan site (thanks y’all):
“They Might Be Giants (aka “TMBG”) is an American alternative music group from Brooklyn, NY. The group was founded by John Flansburghand John Linnell, and has since expanded to include a backing band, currently composed of Dan Miller, Danny Weinkauf, and Marty Beller. Throughout their 25+ year career, the band has racked up several charting albums and singles, as well as two Grammy awards (one for their song “Boss Of Me“, and the other for their children’s album Here Come The 123s). Additionally, their 1990 album Flood has been certified Platinum, while the DVD of Here Come The ABCs achieved Gold status. They continue to record alternative albums, and have also branched out into the realm of children’s music.”
See? Usually you see bands… mature… and they end up playing smaller clubs bringing their children on stage to sing their old hits with them… TMBG figured, why not make children’s music, too? And it all works. Who can deny that Istanbul (Not Constantinople) would not lend itself perfectly to some sort of strange Blues Clues episode? (And sorry, I love the videos. If you don’t get it, we’ll just keep trying)
