This is very important to understand for those who don’t pay attention to politics until about 14 days before the election (you’re probably much more sane than I am as a result, smart move) ;)
Almost the moment that Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan as his VP running mate for the 2012 election, the Republicans started a very misleading talking point about Obama’s plan’s impact on Medicare. I’m not certain of the exact terminology (because they all use the same talking points for those scary key words that have tested well), but basically they’re claiming that President Obama’s plan will cut $700 billion from Medicare, and that Romney and Ryan want to “protect medicare”
This is important: There are cuts in medicare under Obama’s plan because Obamacare takes care of the things that are cut in medicare: THERE ARE NO LOSS OF SERVICES under Obama’s plan. It’s a 700 billion cut, but only on paper for funding purposes to put into the larger, ALL Americans health care plan that is Obamacare. Senior Citizens do NOT lose any care.
Romney / Ryan, on the other hand: they ALSO CUT MEDICARE, but instead of putitng that money back into health care services like Obama does… they give MORE TAX CUTS TO THE RICH. They cut taxes, and also cut medicare so they can pay for cutting taxes on the rich.
How, exactly is cutting medicare services to pay for tax cuts for the rich “protecting medicare” when it is taking money from the system and giving it to the people who don’t even need to use it because they’re millionaires? How is that “protecting medicare” and not “stripping medicare so my friends and I can keep even MORE of our dividend money that we’ll never spend in the economy, but that makes me feel more important than everyone else.”
Because “money” makes people important in this world. Sad.
Furthermore, remember: in the Paul Ryan budget, taxes are INCREASED on basically everyone who is NOT rich…. THAT’S how the magical Paul Ryan budget pays for… not health care or other services for US citizens… but even MORE defense spending and the tax cuts for the rich.
Why aren’t more people outraged about this?
The republicans also love to shout that the ripped-ab Paul Ryan’s plan “fixes” the deficit…. not until the 2030’s…. at or even MORE than 20 years from now, and that’s not taking into account all of the problems in increases in emergency care that will have to happen if the Romney / Ryan plan goes through, hacks medicare, and they repeal Obamacare. Basically, everyone except politicians and the very wealthy are royally screwed.
Their other argument is the Paul Ryan plan to kill medicare does not affect current retirees….
SO!?!?!?
Now in America it’s OK to say, stick it to our kids? Stick our screwed up system on the people who when old enough to deal with it, we’ll all be dead anyway? That is NOT OK. Just because you don’t kill mediare (and most likely social security) for anyone over 55 does NOT make it OK. That still leaves a few hundred million Americans with no health care and no social safety net that we’ve been paying into just as much as the next person in this country.
The ONLY answer is to make health care less expensive, and the only way to do that is to put in under government control. Just like all the countries who are hundreds of years older than the United States have done. They’ve learned. Now it’s time for us to get over the worship of Wall Street over dying citizens and do it.
Vote Romney / Ryan and you’re screwing this country, and what we stand for: good, moral, caring, driven, find a solution to any problem, sort of people. Theirs is NOT a solution. It’s a plan to make rich people more money, disguised as a “deficit hawk” budget.
Screwing the little guy is not what this country is about. It’s not what all your religions are about, and it’s not what makes people think you’re a great person after you’re dead. If you want to leave a legacy and have people think you’re a good, moral person: vote democrat.
