Mitt Romney likes to re-write history; especially his own. Unfortunately for Mitt, there are people who actually care about such things.
Romney’s book, “No Apology: The Case for American Greatness” was handed out at the Republican National Convention this year. What is it with Republicans in the title of every book they ever write has some sort of implication that they are the only party capable of Greatness, and that the country currently is not great? Nostalgia for the past is not a good thing to have as a primary motivator of an entire party. That gets groups of people into very big trouble. Moving backwards, moreover, is a terrible way to live one’s life or make policy.
But back to Mitt Romney’s “No Apology” book where he endorses an encourages “Obamacare” (the Affordable Care Act).
The original hard cover version that the Mitt Romney campaign handed out in the goodie bags wasn’t the redacted version that is on the shelves now… the current version is the “post-running for President as a Republican in 2012” version of the Mitt Romney book, and has certain things left out, of course.
The main point of the book is pretty clear: bash Obama (THERE’S something new from the right side of the political isle, eh?). Even the Amazon.com book description reads like a Hollywood movie where the world, once again, will end unless you vote for Mitt:
In No Apology, Mitt Romney asserts that American strength is essential—not just for our own well-being, but for the world’s. Governments such as China and a newly-robust Russia threaten to overtake us on many fronts, and radical Islam continues its dangerous rise. Drawing on history for lessons on how great powers collapse, Romney shows how and why our national advantages have eroded. From the long-term decline of our manufacturing base, our laggard educational system that has left us without enough engineers, scientists, and other skilled professionals, our corrupted financial practices that led to the current crisis, and the crushing impact of entitlements on our future obligations, America is in debt, overtaxed, and unprepared for the challenges it must face.
…. because President Obama doesn’t think that American strength is essential? Once again, they don’t get the point that how that power is exercised is what’s key, not whether or not the power is possessed. But that’s not the point of this post. What we care about is how in the non-edited version of Mitt Romney’s book, he encourages and endorses what is done in Obamacare, in particular, the mandate that all republicans are up in arms about. Never mind that it’s been a wild success in Massachusetts, and never mind that the USA is the only major Western country that does NOT have universal health care, and never mind that the USA has the highest health care costs by double than any other nation…. never mind the facts. We’ve already been told directly by Mitt Romney’s campaign that they won’t be bothered by fact checkers.
Page 177 of the hardcover version of Mitt Romney’s book, “No Apology” he describes his Massachusetts health care law, and writes:
“We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care.”
I totally agree with you Mitt. YOU totally agree with you Mitt. Time to be a man and stand up for what you really believe, not what the party tells you to. You did a great thing with the MA health care law and you know it; the ACA is modeled after it.
I’d love to have a really conversation with the hard cover version of Mitt Romney. I bet that guy has some legitimate opinions.
Too bad the book is already in paperback… no spine.
