The Trump family are ignorant about all things non-Trump. It’s safe to believe that Don Jr. is intimately familiar with every strand of his hair, but still has no idea why taking marching orders from a foreign government is considered a crime against the United States.
And Don Jr’s father? Well, President Trump’s very existence is trapped inside his own head: a hall of gold-framed mirrors endlessly reflecting his own ego. Donald Trump is the human-awareness manifestation of a black hole. He is, and always will be, ignorant of all things that he doesn’t physically touch and destroy.
Therein is Special Prosecutor Mueller’s problem: in America we don’t indict people for arrogant ignorance, and we don’t indict them for entitled nitwit behavior. Exceptions are rare. If someone is killed due to someone being an idiot – involuntary manslaughter – then our justice system might prosecute them. At this point some of you might shout “Charlottesville! Trump’s rhetoric is the cause of the violence!“… but President Trump is easily three-degrees-of-separation safe from all of that.
Mueller has another problem: we don’t prosecute fools.
One of the few things we do know about the Russian investigation is that the Trump campaign was duped by Putin. They were giddy for Clinton dirt, and keen to cash in on the increased brand awareness garnered from Donald’s presidential run. Trump, his family, and his staff were susceptible to flattery and took every lure Russia cast their way.
But you can’t send someone to jail for being played a fool.
The Trump campaign was manipulated by smarter, more capable operatives. They were duped… but that’s not criminal – especially given the fact they clearly didn’t know what they were doing was wrong.
The Trump family defense strategy is a viable one: “Not guilty: we’re idiots.”
Overcoming the “we’re idiots” defense places a huge burden on Mueller to prove motive. To successfully prosecute, Mueller must prove that Donald Trump is not a moron… which goes against all the evidence millions of people have witnessed since he became President of the United States.
Good luck Bob.
