WYNU5AVVJD5Z :: There are countless ways to mock the manner in which republicans in Congress have suddenly seemed to perk up at the chance to break bread with Obama. They appear giddy (in as much is possible for them to be so) that “Finally!” Finally, they say! Obama is talking to the republicans.
However, if the criterion for defining “talking” is using the expense accounts for free dinners and pictures in the media, than I feel there’s even less hope for Washington politics. Obama has tried for years to talk, but that’s not what the republicans wanted… they wanted to be courted.
… let us all get this straight: basically, the Republican Party is saying that they’re not getting into bed unless they get at least a good meal out of it. Maybe congressional republicans are people who should have been testifying (and being called names by Rush Limbaugh) at the hearing on contraception instead of Sandra Fluke.
We also cannot put aside the various narratives that keep creeping out of these dinner talks. One such being that the rank and file republicans with whom the President is dining have no idea what he’s offered in the budget talks. Apparently, such details are too difficult for the republican leadership to pass along to the rest of them. We all know our mighty representatives ever read the bills on which they vote, but we were at least hoping they took the time to check out the White House web site to look at the proposals before calling him Hitler or Stalin on television. I guess we just ask too much of our representatives.
We’ve also learned that the Republican Party has no intention to act, rely, or make decisions based on facts. Spin is their MO. Spin IS the Republican Party. They lack policy, so spin is all they have left to keep the base in line.
We’ve learned that republicans want to be courted. Republicans want to swoon and be hand-fed chocolate delicacies. To talk to a republican is to feed a republican. That’s the only way to get them to do anything.
… and don’t the lobbyist know it.
So here we have the President of the United States of America traveling back to 1967 (the Supreme Court seems to be doing the same), and forcing the old question, guess who’s coming to dinner? Obama has to court the republicans who don’t want him inside their house, let alone their town.
Barack Obama (…he’s the twice-elected President, by the way… just in case republicans have forgotten that fact) has been forced to invite himself to dinner. Forced to “impress” the people who feel they are the morally pre-destined parents of the country (and have “lots of black friends” no doubt) to make them feel better about marrying their daughter.
