Over the last two days I – along with the majority of voters in this country – have been repeatedly asking…
“What the hell do we do now?”
When we feel lost, it’s OK to admit we need a guide to help us through the Hard Times and various states of mourning, fear, anxiety… what-the-f-ness…
First Lady Michelle Obama (The First Lady) introduced us to such a socio-emotional guide: We Go High.
We Go High won’t answer our specific fears of a Donald Trump presidency. (like… Will his official portrait be the painting his charity bought for his restaurant? [or] Will President Trump demand his Secret Service code name be “Bigly” or “Big League”?)
We Go High won’t protect a woman’s right to choose. But she can reintroduce those who strive to take away that right to Freedom. (The real Freedom, not the one that plays him in the pulpit or on TV.)
We Go High can’t teach all those who voted for President-Elect Trump that supporting a candidate who revels in racism is a bad thing. (Even if they justify it with a belief that a real estate egomaniac can be good for the national economy because he cares so much for “the little people” and has soooo much relevant experience.)
She can’t stop racism, islamophobia, or the constant fear of “the other”.
She can’t stop a person’s rational thinking ability from being swallowed up and belched out by the dark corners of the hate-blog Internet and feedback loop of social media (she doesn’t even know how to send a tweet).
She won’t protect or improve the Affordable Care Act.
Nor Medicare.
Nor Dodd-Frank.
She won’t protect the social programs slashed by the Paul Ryan Budget.
She won’t shield your undocumented friend or family.
She won’t even buy you lunch.
But over these next few weeks she can give a little peace – just long enough to take a breath or two and realize the world doesn’t end every time a young democracy makes a shocking decision.
A few breaths to ease the pain that exists in so many American chests is a good place to start.
Once we can breathe again… then We Go High can teach us how to fight.
