For the first time in American history, approving a cabinet pick required the vote of the Vice President.
How it happened:
Mike “Pensive” Pence is an advocate of school vouchers. His efforts to push vouchers in Indiana received millions of dollars from the DeVos family. Conveniently, today he was called upon to break the tie and approve the most unqualified cabinet secretary ever to hit the Hill.
VP Pence saw it as a “high honor” to promote incompetence.
It’s quite fitting in Trump’s America.
DeVos, who has never worked in education, never attended a public school, and never sent her children to public schools… is now in charge of America’s public schools. Her only connection to education is owning a charter school – which benefits from voucher programs – and giving millions of dollars to lobby for school voucher legislation and candidates.
While public education is still effectively controlled by states and local communities, having a billionaire “school choice” advocate running the Education Department – and controlling federal funds – is certain to have tangible impacts on the public education system.
When Trump was elected, the first thought out of my mouth was: “I’m really glad I don’t have kids…” Now that Pensive Pence has blessed us with Betsy, that sentiment has been solidified.
