Extreme right wing media and overly-zealous Tea Party politicians promote and encourage “patriots” like Sovereign Citizens – who are the number one terrorist threat in the United States. They are promoting and encouraging extremist groups… Why is it allowed to continue?
A recently released START report detailed the top terrorist threats to the United States. The greatest threat: Sovereign Citizens and similar “patriot” groups who Fox News and extreme right wing media put on a pedestal, glorify, and encourage.
What would we do if Fox News promoted Al-Qaeda rallies? What would we do if Fox News directed people to fundraising websites that support Al-Qaeda? What would we do if Tea Party politicians tailgated and BBQ’d with Al-Qaeda while pointing guns at law enforcement officers from bridges? That’s exactly what’s happening with right wing media and extreme militia groups.
Let’s Do The Math Once Again: Guns + Paranoia = Bad
Sovereign Citizens and other paranoid militia movements continue to linger at the Bundy Ranch. The Bundy Ranch “Stand Off For Freedom!” was predominantly a Fox-created frenzy. It continues to be a rallying cry for the far right, for the Tea Party, and for right wing media groups who make money from ignorance, fear, and anger. The extreme right wing’s drive to monetize politics and paranoia has resulted in one very real thing: creating the top-most terrorist threat in the United States. Well done Fox. Well done Alex Jones. Well done Wayne LaPierre. Cheers to your success.
Law enforcement says Sovereign Citizens are more dangerous to the United States than any other terrorist group. Number one. (Go USA!) This is a direct result of the ever-increasing danger of information bubbles inside Republicanland. A lack of outside input starts to collapse in on itself. It’s like keeping a person in isolation for too long: they go a little crazy from lack of outside stimulus. That is exactly how Sovereign Citizens became the top terrorist threat: right wing media’s desire to make money at all costs – including creating domestic terrorists. Had they not been stoked by entities like Fox News… would they have reached the number one status?
The threat of violence from the paranoid right wing is greater than the threat of Islamic extremism. Shall we wake up now? The media-created paranoia continues to be poked and stoked by people like Wayne LaPierre and the extreme political right. Fringe groups like the Sovereign Citizens continue to eat up the anger, and continue to become more dangerous as a result of their increasing estrangement from civilized society (and reality).
The people who feed and create paranoia in the minds of groups like the Sovereign Citizens are just as much to blame for violence as those who enact it. This is doubly true if they continue to promote the paranoia and anti-social behavior AFTER these groups have been officially labeled the top terrorist threat in America.
Given Right Wing Media Is Guilty of Promoting America’s Top Terrorist Threat, Why Is Such Activity Not Being Stopped?
It’s official.
We have reports and studies from law enforcement: militia groups are the largest terrorist threat in the United States. The United States is very clear on its laws when it comes to aiding and abetting terrorists and terrorist groups. As such, we need to get the far right — and the NRA — to stop encouraging these groups.
Is there not precedent in American law to shut down and even send to jail people who create extremism that leads to terrorism? What’s the difference in this situation?
This is very simple: Sovereign Citizens are the largest terrorist threat in the United States to the United States. Fox News, NewsMax, Drudge, Alex Jones, and the other darker corners of right wing media encourage and promote these sorts of terrorist organizations. That sort of activity extends beyond the protections of the First Amendment. These “news” and media organizations can not claim First Amendment protections when what they say promotes terrorism.
We have mountains of proof showing right wing media promoting and encouraging the activities and beliefs of domestic terrorist groups; many on public airwaves. Just look at Fox News coverage of all the “patriots” at the Bundy Ranch. The question to the rest of us is: What are we going to do about it? Now that we have documented proof of the threat… will we continue to sit around and hope the craziness goes away, or will we finally start demanding action from the companies who help promote and create this sort of domestic militia extremism?
To get back the sanity maybe we just need a good lawyer whose not afraid to take on the entire right wing media machine. Anyone?
I’m not a constitutional lawyer, but I’m very, very curious to know at what point the First Amendment stops protecting public media outlets that encourage and promote terrorist groups. I know it’s probably grey, but it’s a question worth asking.
