Feel the Bern and MAGA are the same. They are brothers. They are destined to increase extremism and alienate the majority of citizens who prefer government be run by people who listen rather than shout.
Feeling trapped by the state of the Democratic primary?
Yeah, me too.
That sinking feeling in your belly is caused by The Bernie-Or-Busters behaving even worse than they did in 2016… which is the reason why we got President Trump in the first place: demonstrative selfishness and non-voting that handed Trump the election. “Demonstrative selfishness…” how Trumpian.
For those democrats and independents who look at Bernie Sanders with fear, find camaraderie with your republican counterparts who felt exactly the same during the rise of President Donald J. Trump… maybe y’all should take that commonality and build a coalition.
Bernie Sanders supporters are the mirror image of the purification-seeking Tea Party republicans and “build the wall” Trumpsters. And yet, Bernie-Or-Busters obliviously drive forward in their demand for even more party purity. Historically, that political conditioning has only ever lead to one thing: more extremism – just like Donald Trump. Fostering extremism to win an election is the very core of Trumpism.
Americans have a choice in the 2020 election: do you want Truth or do you want Trumpism? The beautiful sadness of humans’ inability to be objective is that the current front runner of the Democratic Party, Bernie Sanders, embodies the core of Trumpism.
Bernie Sanders is the negative image of Donald Trump. The only difference is Senator Sanders (I not D) has an attention span capable of reading a presidential briefing book. Otherwise, the id is the same.
Bernie Sanders “progressives” are creating their own version of Donald Trump World by refusing to acknowledge this simple fact: the characteristics that make plurality work in society – especially a society as large as the United States – are compromise and moderation. Bernie Sanders is antithetical to compromise – unless the issue is guns, apparently. Bernie Sanders is a very old mad yelling at the moon, and he will accomplish nothing more than making American politics even more dysfunctional than it currently is under President Donald “Pay for a Pardon” Trump.
It’s either ironic or unforgivingly ignorant that the party claiming to embrace plurality is doing everything it can to purify its base to the most extreme. Bernie Sanders and his supporters, like Donald Trump and his own mob, are making the major political parties more extreme and therefore smaller; and ultimately impossible to build a governing coalition.
Nothing good has ever resulted from political movements seeking purification.
The only result of political purification is extremism. Period. On that point there is no legitimate counter argument.
Trumpism isn’t merely a detachment from Truth coupled with a collapse of standards and an attack on the rule of law – at its core, Trumpism is a hardening. It’s beyond tribalism, it’s more like entrenchment during the darkest hours of a war with a constant feeling if anxiety-driven fear of the enemy. Trumpism is beyond solidification of a political base: it’s sinking the feet of the political party base into blocks of concrete and making them so angry and afraid of the opposition that no amount of reasoning will ever change their minds. Again, it’s astonishing that in the 2020 presidential election the party of pluralism is the one kicking out anyone who is not on the extreme left, while the party that defines itself with exclusionary policies is trying desperately to build a bigger tent. How is it that we have become so blatantly stupid?
Feel the Bern and MAGA are the same. They are brothers. They are destined to increase extremism and alienate the majority of citizens who prefer government be run by people who listen rather than shout. Politics is a rubber band that usually stretches one way, then the other, but with Trump and Bernie, both sides are pulling so hard that it will break. And it will break. All bowel movements masquerading as political revolutions do. They win and election or two, they cannot govern from their extreme position, and implode.
But Bernie Sanders Doesn’t Lie Like Donald Trump Does, How Can They Be The Same?
Emotion, duration of purpose, and intensity of anger will always cause people to gradually increase the number and complexity of their lies. We all lie (most often to ourselves) and Bernie Sanders is no different. Like Trumpsters, Bernie-Of-Busters are a mob. The more a mob chants and rants at its leader, the more that leader gets swept up in the emotion and primal drive to be fed by their adoration.
Bernie Sanders may be more truthful than Donald Trump. Bernie Sanders by believe in the concept of Truth unlike Donald Trump. But that doens’t mean Bernie Sanders who spin the sh*t out of reality to keep his supporters rallied and his ego nourished. Look to his inability to take the 2016 loss and his 2020 reversal of position on convention delegates. Bernie has been fighting for his cause for what, 30-40 years? Bernie is what he believes, and when a person reaches that stage of belief they will do anything to keep the belief alive. Anti-vaxxers do it. Flat-earthers do it. Trumpsters do it, and so, too, will Bernie and his Bernie-Or-Busters. Just because this iteration of political purification believes in facts doesn’t mean they will tell the truth, especially if Truth is against their ingrained personal narrative of meaning and self-worth.
It’s called History. And once again Americans apparently believe they are beyond it. Even though good intentions always go dark when turned into a chanting mob, and every empire single empire has fallen before us, this time it will be different. Ignorant arrogance. It is of the worst kind.
No. This time it will not be different. We – human animals – are too simple, too emotional, and too desparate to be part of a pack to learn from the built-in failure of extreme political movements. They fail by design. When this cycle in which we currently suffer finally implodes, American politics will probably return to a decade or two of relative moderation, but then the rubber band will start getting stretched once again. Of that I have no doubt, because History told me and she is always right.
